The first hint of autumn is here, and with that slight chill in the air comes the urge to dress a little warmer. However, don’t be too quick to put away your summer wardrobe. With a little clever layering, you can continue wearing your favourite summer pieces for those in-between weeks, before you need to reach for full-on cold weather layers.
Think extra layers, richer textures and pops of autumnal colour. These simple additions can instantly make your outfits feel more autumnal, while giving you time to work out what you really need to buy for the season ahead.
Here are five easy ways to help you transition from summer to autumn seamlessly.
Embrace layers
Can’t let go of this year’s summer dress? Put a long-sleeved, round-neck T-shirt underneath it for added warmth – opt for colours that pop or patterns such as stripes for a bit of style. Marks & Spencer and Uniqlo always have good basics. Do the same with lightweight dungarees.
Switch up textures
It’s time to start adding some different textures to your summer wardrobe, but hurrah – think of all the clothes you haven’t been able to wear during the summer heat. Personally, I can’t wait to get my collection of jeans back into the mix, as well as faux leather trousers.
Leather midi skirts will look great for autumn (I’ve seen some lovely designs at John Lewis and AllSaints), while new-season cashmere is also starting to appear. Wear the skirts with loafers for a smart look, or pair them with a snuggly sweatshirt and cotton twill trench coat when the temperature drops.
Yes, jacket required
It’s time to introduce light and mid-weight jackets. Try a darker denim jacket or a classic utility style – the latter can be particularly good for adding definition at the waist. Or, if you’re looking for something a little more on-trend, consider one of the new funnel-neck jackets that are in stores this season.
If you have a single-breasted blazer in your wardrobe, you can also wear it over your summer vests for a polished look, whether you’re dressing for work or a smarter occasion.
Wear warmer colours
Seek out the pieces in your wardrobe that will add warmth to your autumn outfits. Think golden hues, muted greens, deep purples and orangey reds to give your look an instant autumnal feel.
You don’t have to overhaul your wardrobe. Adding one or two warmer shades can make a surprising difference. Try throwing a sweatshirt over your shoulders or adding a tonal silk scarf to your existing summer pieces.
Swap your sandals for warmer footwear
Think ballet flats and loafers that you might already have in your wardrobe. Or look at this season’s trend for slouchy suede ankle boots.
These will look particularly good with slim or straight-leg jeans, as well as your summer midi skirts and dresses, giving you a little coverage on bare legs. After all, no-one wants to reach for the tights just yet!
